Playgun Daughter Tops Select Yearling Sale at $122,500

WHITESBORO, TEXAS, Oct. 16, 2023—The Select Online Sale’s 2023 Yearling Sale once more proved the strength of the Western performance industry in its October 2023 sale, headlined by standout cow-horse bloodlines and exceptional black-type pedigrees.

The top five yearlings averaged $85,700, led by Calamiity Jane, the 2022 palomino filly by the timeless stallion Playgun out of the High Brow Cat mare Catilax, who sold for $122,500. Calamiitty Jane was consigned by Ty Smith and Tyson Benson.

“There are a lot of questions about what the horse market is doing, but after today I believe for the best horses, it’s as strong as it was last year, if not stronger,” Ty Smith said. “Great yearlings are at the highest I’ve ever seen. I can tell that people who were buying multiple yearlings are now buying one big-timer, because the competition in every Western discipline has never been tougher. The middle end yearlings have slowed some, but the best ones are at an all-time high."

The standout bay roan colt Nu Rebellion, by Metallic Rebel and out of the NCHA World Champion mare Special Nu Baby and consigned by Gary Barker was the second high seller, bringing $115,000. Nu Rebellion’s maternal sister MS Baby Cakes, shown to $227,000 in earnings by Lloyd Cox, sold just last month in The Select Online Sale for $540,000.

Nu Rebelion (Metallic Rebel x Special Nu Baby) consigned by Gary Barker brought $115,000.

"Our breeding manager, Maria Gutierrez, did an incredible job fitting these yearlings," said Solo Select Founder, Melanie Smith. "She takes a lot of pride in her work - and it shows. Our team put the time and effort in to make sure these yearlings were presented to their very best. From social media, photos, videos and our office - we really have a top-notch crew right now. It makes all the difference in the results for both buyers and sellers."

Rounding out the top five were Stevies A Classic (red roan colt by Stevie Rey Von out of the Dual Rey mare All Classical) for $100,000, consigned by Pat and Lisa Taylor; Ozzys Crazy Train (sorrel colt by Stevie Rey Von out of SDP Got Fancy Genes by RC Fancy Step) for $46,000, consigned by Glenn Oekle; and Itz All Mine (sorrel filly by Reyzin The Cash out of That Catomine by High Brow Cat) for $45,000, also consigned by Pat and Lisa Taylor.

Solo Select's stallion, Metallic Cattack, had a big weekend as well. The high selling yearling was Tictacpaddywhack, a bay colt out of Scoots Peptolena, who brought $40,000. The second high seller was Daddy Issuez, a roan filly out of NFR mare Little Extra Credit. She brought $36,000.

“The great stallions—enrolled in incentives that reinvest in the industry—really make an impact on sales like this,” said Melanie Smith, owner of The Select Online Sale. “The set of colts these sires had in this

yearling sale spoke for themselves, and buyers responded. And those buyers will be able to compete for millions in the next few years on these

colts.”

The next Select Online Sale is the Thanksgiving Day Embryo and Mixed Sale, opening at 8 a.m. CT Nov. 26, 2023, closing at 5 p.m. the same day.
