Lloyd Cox’s Superstar $227,720 earner, Ms Baby Cakes, To Sell In Labor Day Select Online Sale

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Ms Baby Cakes, the standout winner of over $227,000 under the guidance of the cutting’s $11-million man Lloyd Cox, will sell to the public Sept. 4, 2023, exclusively in The Select Online Sale, along with her 2024 embryo by NCHA Open Futurity Champion, Dual Reyish.

The multiple-time aged event Open Champion is poised to become one of the cutting industry’s next blue-hen mares.

Raised by Barker Ranch Cutting Horses, the 2015 bay mare by Metallic Cat out of NCHA Hall of Fame mare Special Nu Baby by Dual Rey was a finalist in the NCHA’s Open Futurity, winning the first go under Cox. Ms Baby Cakes was also the West Texas Open Derby Champion, Cotton Stakes Open Derby Champion, Breeders Invitational Open Classic Co-Reserve Champion, and made countless other Open Finals throughout her career.

“She was very capable of winning rounds or finals or whatever,” Cox said. “This mare peeked at the right time as a 3-year-old, and she’s still exceptional and sound to show to this day. She was always mature physically and mentally about her job. If you gave her the opportunity, she was going to do well. And she can still go on and win for any level of competitor.”

Not only is the mare’s own black-type impressive, her maternal sister-Baby Talk by Smooth Talkin Style-also picked up $281,843 in NCHA earnings, including a fourth-place check at the NCHA Open Futurity and two Abilene Spectacular Open Classic Championships. Their first dam, Special Nu Baby, earned a massive $482,061 as an NCHA World Champion and as a finalist at the NCHA Open Futurity.

“It’s hard to buy mares like this, that are bred this way, that have had this much success,” Cox said.

Her oldest crop of colts is 2 this year, including two fillies by Hottish that will both return to Cox to compete as a 3-year-olds.

“One is in training with Travis Stewart, the other with TJ Good,” Cox said. “They’re both in exceptionally capable hands right now, and we’re looking forward to the future with these babies.”

Her 2024 foal in utero, by Wolf Livestock’s NCHA Open Futurity Champion Dual Reyish, sells as lot 304-1 in the same sale. This embryo is in a recipient mare.

Cox aims to have the opportunity to show the mare’s babies for her new owners, while Solo Select would hope to continue to manage the mare’s breeding career, with the possibility of enrolling her in the Select Genes program.

“Mares like Ms Baby Cakes are the kind that we built our program with the dream to offer,” Solo Select’s Melanie Smith said. “Her abilities in the arena are beyond reproach, and the sky is the limit as far as what she can produce and how she can affect the future of the cutting industry.”
